Norville preferred the World of EverFantasy to the real world. In WoEF if someone pissed you off, you took him to a side room and separated his head from his shoulders. There was a visible difference between those that put in the hours and those that didn't. Norv paid no attention to the people in starting equipment. Newbies. They were a dime a dozen. Even the Power Gamers were easy to spot. Yes they had the best equipment, but they did not take the time to make it their own. It was almost a uniform: Helm of Mars, Breastplate of Spozgar, the Pouch of Az... They buy game guides and use spreadsheets to calculate the best combination of equipment and skills to produce the greatest damage. As soon as one person figures out the formula, there are suddenly hundreds of wannabes.
The people Norv sought out were the ones that had a theme for their persona -- and always acted withing that persona. They were worth knowing. They never resorted to wearing something just because it had a better armour value. They spent every effort to polish and perfect themselves within the game. None of their equipment was out of line. Even their footwear was consistent with their theme. They were the closest to Norv's standard.
Norv played an "Old Knight" named Sir Nathen that had not forgotten the meaning of honour. He was based on Arthurian legends. To him, justice was the swift application of a sharp sword. Sit Nathen had no use for magic himself, but did not discourage it for others of noble intent. Arthur did have Merlin. Sir Nathen did not depend on just one mage -- one mage was vulnerable and weak.
He had started a guild called "7h3_R0µnÐ_74b£3" which was l33t for "The Round Table". It had not lived up to his ideal. None of the original applicants had passed Sir Nathen's stringent tests. He was forced to lower his standards and have lesser beings in the guild. Many players wanted to be in his guild. It had status and honour. He had borrowed a line from Rurroni Kenshen as the guild motto: "SLAY EVIL IMMEDIATELY". There was a long list of things he thought were evil.
Tonight would be a good night. Playing in the early morning hours meant the he could party up with Japanese players. They were more into the full immersion experience than Western players. There was no talk of Hit Points or Character Stats. They used the more natural language: "I am very fast but not very strong." He found a group of people and went off to slaughter goblins. Life was so much easier here
