Norv managed to pull himself was from World of EverFantasy.  It was difficult because that world was more real to him in many ways.  Leaving the game gave him a headache.

He put his uniform on with great reluctance.  The industrial green pants with light green shirt did nothing for his already pale complexion.  No wonder the kids called the security guards "Green Hornets".

Tonight he was working as extra security for the high school.  They were having a dance tonight which meant it was open house for "childish pranks"  It infuriated Norv when he caught some kid vandalizing the school,  their parents were always "It's just his high spirits.  And it's not like he hurt anyone."  And if he HAD hurt someone, then you got the line "Boys will be boys."

At least tonight he was working outside.  Altercations were fewer, but more serious.  Alcohol was usually present.  And teenagers always felt that the world owed them. Kids today would  scream bloody murder if they got a splinter because they thought they would be able to sue the school board for reckless endangerment or failing to provide a safe environment.

His headache was becoming more pronounced. It got worse the more he thought about how people didn't count their blessings.

A flicker of light from the other end of the football field caught his eye.  He cautiously made his way to the other end of the field.

A gaggle of teenagers were grouped loosely around a garbage can fire.  Figures. What were they trying to prove.  They weren't even being very covert about it  They were in plain view of a dozen houses and from both Priestman and Prospect street.

Norv could make out the ginger coloured glint of a bottle being passed around.  The kids looked like rich castaways.  They wouldn't know what it would be like to really be dependent on that fire for protection and warmth.  It's not like there are dire wolves wandering around Fredericton.

"Satellite 2 reporting to Base.  Come in Base."

"Base here. Watcha got?"

"Looks like ..."

A lone wolf cried ripped through the night.  It was followed by other hunting calls from the rest of the pack.  The night took on a darker aspect.

The kids around the garbage can fire didn't now what to do. The girls grabbed anything they could find: their boyfriends, other girls, or even a tree.  Shadows circled them. One boy took up a branch uncertainly.  They could see anything, but the shadows kept circling.

Suddenly, one of the shadows took form and shot by the boy with the stick.  The boy yipped in pain and dropped the stick.  A large gash appeared on his arm. Blood started oozing out.

One of the girls screamed and another shadow took form and ripped a chunk from her leg.  She collapsed like a rag doll.  Both dark shapes dissolved into shadow and rejoined the circle.

Norv was struck by a sense of deja-vu.  He had seen this before.  Plenty of times.  But not here.  Not in this world.  They were dire wolves -- from EverFantasy. But how did they get here?

One of the young lads tried to make a break for it. His designer running shoes were not up to the task  The circle enclosed him and all that was left was a bloody skeleton.

Norv could feel a connection between him and the wolves.  Somehow they were a part of him. He knew what they wanted...

"Finish them."

The kids disappeared behind a wall of black.  Not even the fire was visible. Screams were cut short by wet ripping noises.

The wall of darkness rose and took off to the west towards Odell Park.  It was a good hunt.

"Satellite 2 this is Base, please respond."

"Base, Satellite 2 here -- just some kids playing with some dogs.  Situation clear."
