Laura and Ku'uaki sat down at one of the cafe tables.
"How much do you know about Abby?"
"She just moved to Fredericton. She doesn't have much stuff. She can find my cat anywhere. She is very fast and quiet on her feet."
"Abby and I work for the same organization: The Conspiracy of Saviors. We are a secretive organization that tried to keep the world safe from monsters."
"Like the Men in Black for monsters?"
Ku'uaki managed to smile even more. "Yes, exactly."
"That explains some of the things Abby does. So why do you want to talk to me?"
"Have you been feeling different lately? Discover new skills you never had before or on the impossible side?"
"um .... yes. How do you know?"
"My gift is the ability to talk to spirits and elementals. The oracles of the organization indicated that something big was going to go down in Fredericton and other places. At first we thought is was the appearance of ghosts after All Saints Day, but that has proven to be a hoax."
"Does this have something to do with the lunar eclipse?"
"Yes it does. The eclipse has awakened the latent psychic powers in a handful of people. For most of those people the effect lasted only for a few days. You are an exception. You were well on your way to developing these powers on your own. The eclipse only brough them out faster."
"So I got to go to the head of class and skip a bunch of steps. Like the ones that tell me what I can do."
"I can help you with that. What have you noticed so far?"
"I though you were supposed to be the one with all the answers."
"Yes, but this is a new thing. I only have a vague idea of what your powers can actually do. From my standpoint, you can manipulate electric fields but more specific to that, information fields. Computers have been around long enough to create their own astral energy. No one in the Conspiracy has ever encountered this before -- the creation of a new magic. I can help you because I have a broad understanding of many different astral energies. Most people are like you and specialize in just one. You have your fire starters, wind wizards, and so on."
"So how do I fit in?"
"Someone in Fredericton has been summoning monsters. We don't know who yet because it is being done in a manner unfamiliar to us. We would like your help so we can figure out who it is, how they are do it, and putting a stop to it."
"Pretty tall order. I don't even know what I can do."
"What have you figured out?"
"I can feel ... sense network cables. I can tell where wi-fi hotspots are. But the weirest is that I have an inner google and internal access to the wikipedia."
The blank look on Ku'uaki's face told Laura that she had left him at the starting post. She took a breath and tried again.
"You've heard of the Internet?"
"Heard of it, but I don't know what it is."
"The Wikipedia defines it as:
'The Internet, or simply the Net, is the publicly accessible worldwide system of interconnected computer networks that transmit data by packet switching using a standardized Internet Protocol (IP) and many other protocols.' Which isn't very helpful is it?"
Ku'uakis broad smile encouraged her to keep going.
"In ancient China, they had signal fires all along the Great Wall. Using a special code, information could be passed very quickly between stations. The Internet is like a web or signal stations. It uses cables to connect from one to another."
[ NEED MORE EXPLANATION ]
"Well, I can feel all those connections. Both the connections made by wire and the connections that use radio waves that pass through the air.
"But apart from that, I can access web sites without a computer. They ones that I use the most are Google - a search engine - and Wikipedia - an online encyclopedia. With these I have access to a large volume of information. A drawback is that I have to be withing 50 metres of a network I can tap into."
"Having the right information at the right time is essential for our operations. Will you join us?"
"What happenes if I don't?"
Ku'uaki's face went very serious, "They we'd have to kill you."
Laura blinked.
Ku'uaki's could not hold a straight face for long. "No, we have mages that can erase any memory you have of us."
"Like the flashy blinky-blinky thing in Men in Black?"
"Yes."
"Ok, " Laura decided, "I'm in."
